Over time, this event evolved, including a street fair. In the nearby town of Thorpe, a “Sunday Rodeo” was held every two weeks, which brought in upwards of 300 spectators to watch. In 1923, $10,000 was donated by the state for the fair, which was used by the organizers to hold the first professional organized rodeo in the state of Washington to cash in on this interest.
The rodeo in 1923 was extremely successful, bringing in many competitors and spectators from miles around. The organizers and city leaders wasted no time in turning the rodeo into a popular annual event.
