When it first opened, it was named the Comerford Theatre and played Alexander's Ragtime Band to 2,074 guests. After being sold, the center reopened in 1949 as the Paramount Theatre. It remained a multiplex until the 1970s when the auditorium flooded by Hurricane Agnes and had to shut down. During the 1980s, the complex sat empty, but was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Finally, after local support from businesses and theatre patrons, the theatre reopened as the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts.
