The Centre opened in 1997 and is the residence of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. It is the namesake of Dr. Francis G. Winspear, who contributed $6 million towards the completion of the building, the largest contribution to a concert hall in Canada’s history. The Francis Winspear Centre's hall has 1,716 seats on the floor level and seating is possible for up to 1,932 when the choir loft is utilized. The hall itself is rectangular, with stepped, curved balconies and terraces. It is a modern example of the “shoebox” concert halls constructed in the latter half of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century.

Titled the Winspear Project, the plans include a 41,000-square-foot expansion as well as a refurbishment of the existing facility. Also included in the plans is the addition of a daycare and a multiple-story parking garage.
