In an effort to help build a new stadium, Dan Martin donated $250,000 and requested that the new stadium be named after his father Clarence D. Martin, former governor of Washington State from 1933-1940. Martin Stadium was then built and opened for the Cougars’ victory against the Utah Utes on September 30, 1972.
