It is named for Hoyt Sherman, a local banker, postmaster and politician appointed as Army Paymaster by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. The building that houses the theater was erected in 1877 and was once the Hoyt family home. The mansion, which also features an art gallery, was selected for preservation by the National Register because of its historical significance, and the theater underwent renovations in 2013.
It can accommodate 1,252 people, with seating for 476 on the balcony and 776 on the main floor. The venue boasts a Victorian-style design, and in addition to a regular roster of music and comedy, it can be rented out for private gatherings as well.
