The building’s old Spanish-style architecture was designed by the New Orleans-based architect Emile Weil. The theater cost $1 million to build and opened on November 14, 1927. One of the most notable events to take place at the theater happened in 1946 when the film “It’s A Wonderful Life” held its world premiere at the Jefferson Theatre. The theater closed in 1972 due to a drop in attendance.

In 1978, the Jefferson Theatre was designated a Texas historic landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The theater was bought in 1997 and underwent a massive $6.5 million renovation in 2003. The renovations turned the Jefferson Theatre into a state-of-the-art performance center, offering Beaumont locals a great venue to see live music and special performances all year round.
