Originally built in 1918 as an African-American community center, the building was transformed into a library in the 1930s and renamed the Carver Library and Auditorium, in honor of scientist George Washington Carver. Jazz masters like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington performed in The Carver from the 1940s through the Civil Rights era. The building later fell into neglect and disrepair, but community efforts prevented its demolition. In 1977, The City of San Antonio reopened the refurbished and modernized building with its current name, the Carver Community Cultural Center.

Jo Long Theatre was named for the influential woman who was The Carver’s supervisor from 1976 to July 1999, is the home of the Main Stage performance series. Artists are selected for their commitment to using their gifts to celebrate their culture and connect with others.

The Carver Gallery in the Jo Long Theatre lobby exhibits a variety of art genres from local and regional artists.
