Johan Cruijff Arena was built from 1993 until 1996. The stadium opened on August 14, 1996, with Queen Beatrix making a grand curtain fall to reveal the world's largest painting "De Zee." John Ewbank composed the opening ceremony, while eight days prior there was a 1400 km torch relay with a 375-runner torch relay, with the first runner being professional soccer player Johan Cruyff, for which the stadium was named after. The first soccer match was against Milan. Tina Turner even opened the stadium with three concerts that drew in a crowd of over 160,000 for her Wildest Dreams Tour.
