The Lied Center of Kansas opened on Sept. 28, 1993, in Lawrence, Kan., and seats up to 2020 occupants in its main auditorium with seating available in the orchestra and the two balcony sections, and a flexible space that seats 200 in its Pavilion. The Lied Center or The Lied was dedicated by Ernst. F. Lied to his parents. He was a KU alumnus and resided on the ancestral lands of the Osage, Shawnee and Kaw indigenous peoples.
The center also has spaces available for meetings, banquets and conferences in the Seymour Gallery and Kemper Lobby. Though the Lied Center primarily hosts performances from the KU School of Music, the KU Department of Dance, and other university organizations, it also plays a larger role in the local Lawrence community, bringing international talent to the stage or hosting events for the Lawrence School District.
