Sometimes called the Coliseum Theatre, this building is located on St. Martin’s Lane, in the City of Westminster in London’s West End district. It opened on December 24th, 1904 as the London Coliseum Theatre of Varieties. The building was designed by Frank Matcham specifically for Oswald Stoll, manager and founder of Stoll Moss Group theatre company, Cricklewood Studios and Stoll Pictures. Their dream was to build the grandest music hall and stage in all of London. The theatre still has all four of its levels for a total of 2,359 seats, making its capacity by far the biggest of the historic London theaters. In fact, the Coliseum was one of the first theatres in Europe to use lifts and the first theatres in London to have a triple revolve installed.
The theatre changed its name to Coliseum Theatre in 1931 and back again in 1968. A few notable theatrical performances in its more than 115-year history are The Hooligan by W. S. Gilbert in 1911, White Horse Inn in 1931, Guys and Dolls in 1957, and Damn Yankees in 1957. From 1961 to 1968 the building was used primarily for cinema and is now primarily an opera house and the home of the English National Ballet.
