It broke ground in 1968 and opened in September of the following year with a construction cost of $3 million. The stadium has a seating capacity of 25,100 seats, but in 2014 a $1 million donation was made to renovate the stadium. This renovation gave the stadium a four story premium seating and press box as well as 24 luxury suites, 24 loge boxes and 700 club seats.
The field was originally named after Utah State University’s most successful football coach and former athletics director, Dick Romney. The renaming came in December of 2005 when it was renamed to honor Merlin Olsen, pro and college football hall of fame member. There was a ceremony held in October of 2010 and a bronze statue was placed depicting Olsen in a full suit and pads in front of the south entrance.
