Since 2008, the arena has been the home court to the University of South Alabama Jaguars men’s and women’s basketball teams, who compete in the Sun Belt Conference of the NCAA Division I. It has also played home to the Mobile Seagulls who were a professional indoor football team, as well as the Southern Alabama Bounce of the American Basketball Association and the Mobile Bay Tarpons of the Southern Indoor Football League.
Mitchell Center broke ground in the spring of 1996 and was finished two years later in June of 1998. The arena was designed by the architectural firm Harvey M. Gandler & Associates with a construction cost of $30 million. Mitchell Center has a capacity of a little over 10,000 spectators for basketball games and can hold up to 10,800 for concerts.
