North Wilkesboro Speedway is a ⅝-mile oval race track located just a few miles east of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. The track originally opened in 1947 and was part of the inaugural NASCAR Modified National Championship season in 1948. In 1949, the track hosted the final race of the inaugural NASCAR Strictly Stock season, which is now known as the NASCAR Cup Series. Until the track first closed in 1996, all three of NASCAR’s national touring series raced at North Wilkesboro including 93 appearances by the NASCAR Cup Series.
After sitting dormant for a number of years, the track was briefly revitalized in 2010 and 2011. Several future NASCAR stars including Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney competed in stock car races held at the track during this time period before the track closed once again in 2011. In 2019, the overgrowth on the track surface was cleaned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and a crew of volunteers so the track could be scanned to be used on the iRacing simulator. Race fans were then able to buy North Wilkesboro Speedway tickets once again when the track re-opened in 2022 thanks to an allocation of funds to the speedway in the North Carolina state budget. In August of 2022, the track hosted a series of modified and late model stock car races known as the Racetrack Revival.
NASCAR superstars like Ryan Newman and Dale Earnhardt Jr. competed in races held during the limited 2022 season, leading to sold-out crowds at North Wilkesboro. In the fall of 2022, NASCAR announced that the NASCAR Cup Series and Craftsman Truck Series would return to North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2023, with the track hosting the NASCAR All-Star Race Weekend.
