The opening show was Sullivan’s Ivanhoe but due to some bad planning, the building was sold within its first year to Sarah Bernhardt who renamed the place, Palace Theatre of Varieties and converted the space, with the help of Walter Emden, into a music hall. The current name was adopted in 1911 under the direction of Herman Finck.
The Palace Theatre has four levels of seating of a total of capacity of 1,400 guests. Primarily a musical and theatre venue, the Palace as provided notable performances of No, No Nanette in 1925, Monty Python’s Spamalot for a three-year run in 2006, The Sound of Music in 1961 and most recently Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in 2016.
