The establishment’s origins trace back to 1946 when a Western-style movie set called Pioneertown was constructed for legendary Western stars Roy Rogers and Gene Autrey. As part of the set, facades were made of a Western saloon, a bank, a chapel and a cantina. Over 50 movies and television shows, such as The Cisco Kid and Judge Roy Bean utilized the set in the 1940s and 1950s.

Harriet, the daughter of Francis, bought the property with her husband Claude “Pappy” Allen and changed the name to Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace.
After Pappy’s death, the property went through multiple owners. However, it has remained popular. In 2012, Billboard named it one of the Top Ten Hidden Gems in the United States. Anthony Bourdain also featured the establishment on his television show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.
