The site then became a shipyard run by Burmeister & Wein in the 1870s on the island. At one point, 8,000 people labored in the shipyard and the site has great historical significance. The shipyard closed in 1996.
Once the shipyard went out of business, the area was repurposed. The abandoned industrial buildings on the island have been renovated and converted into a variety of enterprises, including small craftwork factories, flea markets, storage buildings and entertainment facilities.
