The stadium serves as the home stadium for the minor league baseball team the Birmingham Barons, who compete in the Southern League as Double-A affiliates of the Chicago White Sox. It is also a secondary home stadium for the NCAA Division I baseball team the UAB Blazers.
The stadium was proposed and a feasibility study for the stadium was conducted in 2012 to fulfill the desire for a baseball team in Birmingham after the Barons moved from Rickwood Field to Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in 1988. From 1988 to 2013, the only professional baseball played in Birmingham was the annual Rickwood Classic, which was created in 1996. Construction began on February 2, 2012, and the stadium opened on April 10, 2013. The stadium’s debut was a sold-out game with the Barons hosting the Mississippi Braves.
