Construction of the venue began in April 1966 and was completed in September of the following year. The Students’ Union paid just over half (55%) of the $1.9 million (Canadian) construction costs. The hall was named after former Calgary mayor and Alberta Lieutenant Governor Grant MacEwan. A complete renovation of the venue was completed between December 2018 and April 2019.
Over the years, countless speakers, political leaders, galas, and conferences have been hosted at the venue. However, MacEwan Hall is best known for the excellent sound quality and acoustics it provides for musical acts. Musicians from numerous genres have taken the stage at the hall. MacEwan Hall has hosted concerts from alternative rockers Radiohead and R.E.M., Country pop musicians Dan + Shay, along with Chris Lane, took the stage at the venue. Sarah McLachlan and The Tragically Hip have rocked the stage, while K.D. Lang brought her unique country/folk sound to fans. Even hip-hop legends Public Enemy put on an electrifying show at MacEwan Hall as did Death metal powerhouse Behemoth.
