It got this name due to its significance to the American Turners, a German-American athletic, a cultural and political association founded in the 1820s. The hall was designed by Henry C. Koch and was completed in 1882 and then expanded in 1899. Two fires, one in 1933 and 1941, caused huge amounts of damage to the ballroom and after many attempts to gain the funds to repair the venue, it closed its doors.
However, in 2000, just a couple of years after it was designated as a National Historic Landmark, the Turner Ballroom Preservation Trust was established and made its sole purpose to renovate and maintain the ballroom for civic and cultural purposes. This has included performances by artists like Suzanne Vega, Rod Tuffcurls and The Bench Press and many others. In 2010, the Turner Hall Ballroom was given the “Venue of the Year” award at the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) awards.
