University Stadium is an outdoor football venue that is located on the south campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. It is the home of the New Mexico Lobos football team, which competes in the NCAA Division I Mountain West Conference of the FBS. The stadium has also played host to the New Mexico Bowl, which features the best of Conference USA match up with the best of the Mountain West Conference.
The University Stadium broke ground in 1958 and opened two years later to replace the old Zimmerman Field, with a construction cost of $4.1 million. The stadium went under a major expansion in 2001, adding new bathrooms, more stands and concession facilities. In 2004, the city of Albuquerque donated portable bleachers. The stadium has a capacity of 39,224, and set a record in 2005 with a game against a rival school, New Mexico State, with an attendance of 44,760.
