The stadium was announced in June of 2018, with groundbreaking occurring on February 24, 2019. Due to delays, construction was postponed until later in the summer with a video of excavation for the stadium being released in August of 2019. The stadium was utilized by MLB as an alternate training site for members of the Washington Nationals who were not part of the 40-man roster. The stadium was still unnamed at this time.

On March 5, 2022, the Nationals announced an agreement had been reached with Virginia Credit Union on naming rights in a 10-year deal, and the station was officially renamed Virginia Credit Union Stadium.
