It was originally built to stage vaudeville and live theater shows with the name Pastime Vaudette in 1911. It then became a neighborhood cinema. Neither enterprise was successful, and it soon closed. The building then functioned as a warehouse for the Michigan Aircraft Company during World War I.

The theatre gradually moved to screening foreign films in the 1960s before folding in the mid-1970s. In the mid-1990s, the South East Economic Development neighborhood association campaigned successfully to have the theatre restored and it reopened as an independent non-profit community arts center in 1998. It was acquired by the Grand Rapids Community Media Center in 2005.
