It is named after Ufkes who graduated from WIU in 1954. He was a longtime booster of their athletic programs and made a major gift in 2014 to install the new playing floor in Western Hall.
Western Hall was first opened in 1964. Very few changes were made to the building and layout until the 1990s. The hardwood floors did undergo numerous facelifts throughout the history of Western Hall. A tartan floor replaced the original hardwood in 1973. A parquet-style floor was installed in 1993 and offered an appearance similar to that of the original TD Garden. The surface was replaced again in 2014 with a maple floor.
