When it opened in 1993, the Centre contained three theatres, including the Main Stage, which has 1,727 seats, the 200-seat Studio Theatre and the George Weston Recital Hall. The City of Toronto took control of operating the facility when Livent, the previous operator of the facility, went bankrupt in 1998. The Main Stage was divided into two smaller theatres from 2014 to 2016 after the theater company Dancap, which had frequently staged productions there, dissolved. The Weston Recital Hall, as the George Weston Recital Hall is now called, was designed expressly to create dynamic acoustics by architect and acoustical specialist Russell Johnson. He was awarded the Wallace Clement Sabine Medal by the Acoustical Society of America for his achievements.
