Morali had written a few dance songs shortly before being given a demo tape by Willis. Morali immediately saw potential in the singer and decided the two should collaborate. The original Village People was built by Morali, Willis and Morali’s business partner Henri Belolo, with Willis commanding the lead role in the musical group. The original lineup consisted of Willis, Randy Jones, Glenn Hughes, Felipe Rose, David Hodo and Alex Briley, though Willis is the only one who has remained over the years.

Village People tickets have always been a big hit with fans of disco. While their first album, Village People, found some success with the single “San Francisco (You’ve Got Me)”, the group’s second album Macho Man catapulted the Village People into pop culture institution status. The single “Macho Man” rose to number twenty-five on the Billboard pop charts and became but the first in many well-known singalong tracks associated with the Village People. Rolling Stone wrote of the album, “It seems certain to become the first out-and-out disco album without John Travolta on its cover ever to be certified platinum.” The People’s next album Cruisin’ contains “Y.M.C.A.” which is arguably the group’s best-known song. Though the single peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, the album has been certified platinum and “Y.M.C.A.” has found its way into public consciousness. Though the group’s last charting album came in 1981, the Village People have maintained cultural relevance to this day.
