The university originally competed at the Division II level of the NCAA as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Bellarmine announced in 2019 that the university’s full athletics program would begin the transition to Division I competition following the Bellarmine men’s lacrosse team, which had competed at the DI level since 2005. The Knights became members of the ASUN Conference starting in 2020.

Prior to going DI, the Bellarmine Knights had several successful seasons in various sports at the DII level. The Bellarmine basketball team won the NCAA Men’s Division II Basketball Championship in 2011 and had won several GLVC regular season and tournament conference titles. During the basketball team’s transition to DI, the Knights were invited to compete in the 2021 CBI Tournament and reached the semifinals of the tournament.
