Although the band has changed their looks over the years, they still maintain a dramatic image when they perform, including makeup and stylish costumes. Fronted by vocalist Kyo, Dir En Grey consists of four other members: guitarists Kaoru and Die, bassist Toshiya, and drummer Shinya.

The band began making headway when they released their first EP, Missa, in 1998. They have gone on to release 10 albums to date. They performed in Europe for the first time in 2005, and soon after, began touring in the United States in early 2006. Dir En Grey has performed at several festivals, including South by Southwest and Loudpark Festival. They have also toured with Korn, Megadeath, Slayer, and Children of Bodom.
