The singer-songwriter was born in St. Louis and grew up in Slaughters, KY where his father was a pipe liner. Though he showed interest in music at age 3 by asking for a plastic guitar, he began seriously learning the craft around age 15 by teaching himself songs by John Prine.

Knight began writing his own songs when he was 26 but didn’t begin performing live until he was 30 years old. He eventually moved to Nashville and performed at iconic locations like The Bluebird Café. He caught the attention of producer Frank Liddell who signed him to his first record deal with Bluewater Music and Decca Records. The label released his self-titled debut album in 1998. He later signed with Dualtone Records and released two albums, including his first chart appearance with The Jealous Kind in 2003 which reached #63 on the US Country Chart. The musicians 2008 album Heart of Stone reached #7 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and broke the Top 40 on the Country charts. Following a number of other albums, he took a seven-year hiatus before releasing 2019’s Almost Daylight which put him right back on the charts.
