King got her professional start playing gigs at various restaurants and smaller venues around New York City, including CBGB and The Bitter End.

In 2004, when King was 19 years old, she signed a deal with J Records and made a guest appearance on Nas' album, "Street's Disciple." Following King's success on the album, one of Nas' producers went on to produce King's 2007 debut album, "East Side Story," which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album of the Year. There is overlap in the song style and vocal quality of Emily King and Sara Bareilles, but King's tone is more ethereal.  

When asked how she describes her music, Emily King mentions the John Hughes films of the 1980s, which evoke the nostalgia of youth. Musically, her sound has the vocal color of Prince with the instrumentals of an '80s soundtrack. The passion in King's voice is airy but smooth at the same time, almost as if she's singing/whispering next to you. The songs' melodic hooks are catchy. The beat of the music will have concertgoers moving in their seats.
