The team is currently in the Mid-American Conference's East division. The Akron Zips are the only team in all of college sports to have an endorsement deal with LeBron James' LJ23 apparel line. They're also a member of MAC, but they were previously members at Ohio Valley Conference and Mid-Continent Conference before joining up full time starting 1992.

The team began play in 1901, when it was still known as Buchtel College, and played out of Crouse Gym, the school's original structure, which was constructed in 1888. The team first appeared in the NCAA Tournament when Bob Huggins was their coach in 1986. The University of Akron's men's basketball program has been one to watch for years. The Zips won MAC East division titles in 1998 and earned an invitation to the NIT in 2006 where they won their first round at Temple University before losing in round two. In 2007, the Zips won their second MAC East division and tied the school's all-time wins record in Division I with 26. After winning the conference tournament, they lost in the MAC Tournament Championship by a last-second shot, 53–52 to Miami's RedHawks.
