ARCA is made up of young up-and-comers trying to make their way to NASCAR and veteran drivers are competitive in a lower-budget environment compared to the top three national NASCAR touring series. The ARCA Menards Series competes on several different types of race tracks including dirt tracks, speedways, road courses and superspeedways.

John Marcum, a friend and former employee of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., founded a series in Toledo, Ohio and it was originally known as the Midwest Association for Race Cars. The series based itself on the success of NASCAR and raced primarily in the northern states, whereas NASCAR at the time was based in the southern region of the United States. Early champions of the MARC series included Nelson Stacy and Iggy Katona.
