He began playing the guitar for Deep Blue Dream in 1987 before founding The Smashing Pumpkins in 1988. The Smashing Pumpkins became the band that Billy Corgan was most known for as their lead vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter. Their first album, Gish, debuted in 1991. While the album fared well, it wasn't until 1993 that the band got their big break with the album Siamese Dream, which quickly became a multi-platinum hit. The album's hit singles included "Disarm," "Cherub Rock" and "Disarm."
Billy Corgan tickets rose in demand following the release of The Smashing Pumpkin album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, in 1995. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was nominated for seven Grammy Awards and became a certified 10-time platinum album. In addition, its hit single, "1979," swiftly claimed the No. 1 spot on Billboard's mainstream rock and modern rock charts.
The Smashing Pumpkins temporarily disbanded in 2004, and Billy Corgan began working on his solo career. He debuted his first solo album, TheFutureEmbrace, in 2005. The Smashing Pumpkins reunited after their brief hiatus in 2006. Their new album, Zeitgeist, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard charts in 2007. While Billy Corgan continued to perform with The Smashing Pumpkins, he continued to work on his solo albums. He released a limited vinyl album, AEGEA, in 2007. Billy Corgan debuted his third solo album, Ogilala, in 2017 and his fourth album, Cotillions, in 2019.
