The first Bommarito race, then called the Motorola 300 and run as a CART Series race, was on Saturday, May 24, 1997. The winner of the inaugural race was Canadian driver Paul Tracy, driving for the Penske Racing team. The race was moved to being run in September 2000. It became an Indy Racing League event in 2001, moving to August as well as having the name changed to the Gateway Indy 250. The inaugural winner of that race was Al Unser Jr. racing for Galles Racing. In 2003, the name changed to the Emerson 250, with Helio Castroneves capturing the flag for the Penske racing team.
