Newcombe founded the collective in the early 90s with a vision of combining elements from the blues, country music, and folk and psychedelic rock, among many others. Brian Jonestown Massacre released their first studio album Methodrone in 1995, which established their signature sound reminiscent of groups like Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine. The band’s single “Straight Up and Down” would later be used as the theme for the award-winning HBO drama Boardwalk Empire.

Through the late 90s and early 2000s, Brian Jonestown Massacre took a more experimental turn, incorporating a slew of unorthodox instruments including didgeridoos, congas and sitars. The group’s 2003 album And This Is Our Music saw the band begin using electronic instrumentation, and they continue to push the boundaries of rock music today. Their evolution was the focus of the 2004 Documentary Dig!, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
