His full-length LP Two Saviors, produced and engineered by Andrew Sarlo (he’s worked with Bon Jovi), was recorded in New Orleans during the hottest part of the year. No more than seven days were spent tracking the music. Everything was live on an eight-track tape machine. Only dynamic microphones were used. There were no headphones and Meek was unable to hear any takes until the final day. Sarlo encouraged every recording to be a breath of unrestrained energy — the kind of energy present on a first take.
Meek’s band, Adam Brisbin (guitar), Mat Davidson (bass, pedal, steel, fiddle), Austin Vaughn (drums) and brother Dylan Meek (piano, organ), successfully worked with Sarlo’s strict limitations, ultimately releasing an anthemic record, a piece of art that stands fragile, confusing, weird, uncommon, beautiful and deep…at times, all in one line. Ironically, there’s a cohesiveness to Meek’s record that is unparalleled by other musicians within the folk genre.
