The Sock Puppets were originally founded as the Burlington Indians in 1958. They played within the Carolina League as an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, from whom they took their name. From the late 2000s to 2020, the team played as the Burlington Royals, a minor league affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
In 2021, Minor League Baseball thinned its ranks, and the Appalachian League was restructured as an amateur, collegiate summer league. The Burlington Royals were converted into the Burlington Sock Puppets and joined the Appalachian League with a new roster full of rising college athletes. The Sock Puppets take their name from a reference to the city’s heritage in the textile industry.
