Canadian singer/songwriter Dallas Green started his music career with a band called Helicon Blue, and while the band self-released an album and an EP, the project was relatively short-lived. Green’s next project came in late 2001 when he helped create the beloved post-hardcore band Alexisonfire. Green functioned as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Alexisonfire. Even though Alexisonfire would continue on as a band until 2011, Green started releasing music online under the name City and Colour during his tenure with his hardcore band. The first full City and Colour album, Sometimes, was released in 2005 to a warm reception. Full of beautiful and sad songs inspired by Green’s own life experiences, Sometimes was complimented by one reviewer as a “dynamically gentle and vulnerable” first effort. Sometimes even went on to win the 2007 Juno “Alternative Album of the Year” award.
City and Colour tickets were available for the first time when Greene toured in support of his second album, Bring Me Your Love. Bring Me Your Love incorporated traditional folk instruments not used on City and Colour’s first album, such as harmonica and banjo, and also featured collaborations with other musicians such as Gordon Downie of The Tragically Hip and Matt Sullivan of Attack in Black.
What started as a side project for Green quickly grew into something much larger, as City and Colour began touring with more established acts, such as Lissie, P!nk, Butch Walker and Biffy Clyro. To date, Green has released six albums as City and Colour, most recently in 2019 with A Pill for Loneliness. City and Colour has earned multiple platinum records in Canada as well as undeniable success in the United States and worldwide.
