His unusual nickname came from a friend who called him Coffee instead of Loffy. The name stuck with him for life.
Butler could not resist the call of his other love, baseball, and ended up playing for the Palm Beach Rockets from 1950-1951. After a stint in the army, Butler returned home, married and became a mainstay at Allan Merrill’s Hukilau, playing solo gigs as well as partnering with lifelong friend Cliff Sawyer. He had already seen the early demise of his friend Fate Navarro who became a great sensation in New York, and Butler did not want to risk the same outcome.
