Laing was born in Montreal, Quebec, and got the name Corky from his siblings struggling to pronounce his given name Gordon. They called him Gorky instead which Laing switched to Corky which became his adopted name when he first started drumming in 1961 for The Ink Spots. In 1969, Laing left a band named Energy to join the heavy metal band Mountain.

Corky Laing tickets are most likely recognized for his time working with Mountain through multiple breakups and reunions. The early years of Mountain were some of their bests with three albums produced before their first break up in 1972. During that period, they produced the rock and roll classic “Mississippi Queen.” Laing played with Mountain during a few of their reunion periods along with recording with other artists like Eric Schenkman and Noel Redding. Even as the last surviving member of Mountain’s classic lineup Laing continues to perform releasing original solo work like 2019's Toledo Sessions.
