The school was a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, or ACC, in 1953 and now competes in the Central Division.

Blue Devil lacrosse dates back to April 9, 1938, when the team played North Carolina, beating their rivals 2-1. The school’s first home game was against Syracuse, losing to 5-17. The school finished its inaugural season 2-5. The next season, the team went 7-1 and won their first Dixie Lacrosse League Championship.

Since then, the team has become a perennial powerhouse, winning over a dozen ACC Conference Championships and more than five ACC Conference Tournament Championships. At the national level, the team has made more than 20 NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the Quarterfinals more than 15 times and more than a dozen Final Fours. The team won the first of its multiple NCAA Championships in 2010.
