He was born in Houston in 1958, and often uses his experiences growing up with ADD in his stand-up material. Lowry began singing as part of an on-campus Christian group while he studied at Liberty University in Virginia and developed a passion for comedy while delivering material in between the group’s various songs.

In the mid-80s Lowry composed lyrics for the song “Mary, Did You Know?” which became popular in Christian circles after singer-songwriter Buddy Greene wrote the music. “Mary, Did You Know?” has since been performed by several high-profile artists like Pentatonix, Clay Aiken and Dolly Parton.

Lowry was invited to join the Gaither Vocal Band in 1988 and would go on to be one of its longest-standing members. He often developed his comedy material at the group’s live performances, co-hosting alongside Gaither to keep audiences entertained between songs and during setup. Lowry released his first special Mark Lowry: My First Comedy Video in 1988, following this up with two more specials in the early ’90s.
