The Roots moved to the USL Championship from the National Independent Soccer Association in 2021. The club was formed in 2019.

Home games are played at the Laney College Football Stadium, which is in Oakland California and seats 3,500 but can hold over 5,500 fans when standing. Besides the Roots and the Laney College football teams, it is also home to the Laney College Track and Field team. The first head coach for the Roots was Paul Bravo, who was signed on May 9, 2019.  The team played to a draw in the league’s inaugural game, completing the season with six games in league play and two friendlies with the Mexican teams FC Juarez and Club Atletico Zacatepec.

In their second season in the NISA, the Roots finished first in the Western Conference and were runners up in the NISA Fall Playoffs, before joining the USL.
