When the expansion was announced, the Wave also introduced former USWNT manager Jill Ellis as club president. Ellis made history as the first manager to win two FIFA Women’s World Cups. Former English national teamer Casey Stoney was later announced as the Wave’s inaugural manager. San Dimas native Alex Morgan was one of the club’s first big player signings. Morgan is a two-time World Cup winner and also led the Portland Thorns to the inaugural NWSL crown in 2013. 

The Wave was one of three clubs to join the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) ahead of its 10th anniversary season. Along with Angel City FC and Racing Louisville FC, the addition gives the league 12 clubs. The NWSL is the top level of women’s soccer in the United States.

The NWSL Playoffs will begin on the Saturday following the conclusion of the regular season. The championship game takes place one week later.
