Many traditional instruments from the countries that lie on the original Silk Road route are used by the group. Some examples are the Chinese lute or pipa that is plucked, the Armenian woodwind instrument, the duduk, the Japanese bamboo flute called a shakuhachi and others from other countries such as Mongolia.

In addition to performing in such countries as Iran, Azerbaijan, India and Tajikistan, the Silkroad Collective has recorded multiple albums. Their first album, Silk Road Journey: When Strangers Meet, was released in 2001. The follow-up Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon was released internationally in 2005.
