The kora is a traditional plucked West African instrument with 21 strings similar to a lute and harp.  She was born into one of the five kora-playing families from West Africa is the first woman to famously play the instrument, as traditionally the skill was passed from father to son. Jobarteh was taught to play by her brother and eventually her father. At the Royal College of Music, she learned piano, cello, and harpsichord then studied composition at the Purcell School of Music.  

Sona Jobarteh was four when she first played in public at the Jazz Café in London. While still a student she performed with the Royal Philharmonic, Britten Sinfonia, Viva Chamber Orchestra, and Irish Chamber Orchestra. She has also performed solo work around the world. Her first album Afro-Acoustic Soul as a more European style but her sophomore album Fasiya is more traditionally fused with African musical elements. Audiences can hear this unique blend of British and African influenced music live only with Sona Jobarteh tickets. In 2009 she composed the soundtrack to the documentary Motherland.  In 2021 she made a guest appearance on Ballake Sissoko’s Djourou.
