MLB Spring Training Tickets

Springtime in Arizona and Florida means it’s the start of Major League Baseball and you need to purchase Spring Training tickets. Typically, training starts in February with pitchers and catchers arriving early because they require a longer warm up time. The rest of the team shows up a few days later. When spring break rolls around, Spring Training is in full swing and the teams start to have exhibit games. These games are usually played within the same league based on where they are practicing. In Arizona, you’ve got the Catcus League, and in Florida, there is the Grapefruit League.

Spring Training originated in Hot Springs, Arkansas in the 1890s as a way for teams to become more competitive and successful during that season of play. Originally started by the Chicago White Stockings (today the Chicago Cubs) who trained at the Hot Springs Baseball Grounds in 1886. After their successful season, other teams started to take notice and started to train together as a team before the regular season started. By 1910, most of the major league baseball teams had built stadiums in the area so they could warm up. Be a part of baseball history when you buy your Spring Training tickets now.

One of the more memorable moments in Spring Training history occurred in 1918 when pitcher Babe Ruth was forced to play first base for the Boston Red Sox. He then went and hit two home runs, the second a record-breaking 573 feet; the ball ended up in a nearby pond at the Arkansas Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo. Over the years, famous athletes got their start in spring training in Hot Springs like Cy Young, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson.

Spring Training started to form leagues starting in 1913. The Philadelphia Phillies were the first to start training in Florida when they warmed up for two weeks in 1889. Though it took until 1913 for other teams to migrate to Florida. The Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians trained in Florida in 1913. The Grapefruit League officially started in 1914 when a total of five teams played in Florida.

Unfortunately, the Cactus League had to grow out of avoidance of racism. In 1947, Bill Veeck, owner of the minor-league Milwaukee Brewers was training in Florida when he sat in the segregated section of the ballpark. After chatting with some fans, he was instructed he had to leave by local law enforcement officers. They then called the mayor of Ocala, where the team was practicing. The mayor backed down after Veeck threatened to remove his team from Spring Training in Florida. The team was sold shortly thereafter for unrelated reasons. Veeck bought the Cleveland Indians and convinced the New York Giants to train in Phoenix. The Cactus League was thus formed. In 1947, Larry Doby became the second African-American MLB player and the first in the American League when he played for the Cleveland Indians.

Today, the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues are nicknames given to the regional Spring Training games and are based on the native plants grown within each state. The number of teams is now evenly split between Florida and Arizona at 15. Don’t miss out, buy your Spring Training tickets today.
