The two venues, First Avenue and 7th Street Entry, share the same building in downtown Minneapolis and their names are derived from their locations on the corner of First Avenue and 7th Street. The building was originally a Greyhound bus depot until 1968 when it was reopened as a nightclub called The Depot in 1970, then renamed as Uncle Sam’s in 1972. In 1981 the building was split into two venues named First Avenue and 7th Street Entry with 7th Street entry being the smaller of the two.

With 7th Street Entry being the smaller of the two venues, its purpose was to bring exposure to smaller, lesser-known local bands but iconic artists like Prince, Chico Debarge, Suanne Carlo and many, many more have graced the stage.
