Experience memorable performances in Charleston’s French Quarter with Dock Street Theatre tickets. Dock Street Theatre, known as America’s First Theater, is located at 135 Church Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29401. Its extensive history began on February 12, 1736, when the play “The Recruiting Officer” was performed at the Historic Dock Street Theatre. This original building burned in 1740 and replaced by another theater that closed in the 1780s.
In 1809, Mr. & Mrs. Alexander Calder created Planter’s Hotel from the old theater and adjoining buildings. Small theater companies performed at Planter’s Hotel, including one that contained actor Junius Brutus Booth, father of John Wilkes Booth as a member. The wrought-iron balconies and sandstone columns, still present on the current exterior façade, were added to Planter’s Hotel in 1835. Also of note, African-American Civil War hero Robert Smalls served in the Planter’s Hotel dining room before the onset of war.
Planter’s Hotel fell into disrepair after the Civil War, and the 1886 Charleston earthquake caused further structural ruin. In 1935, the City of Charleston purchased Planter’s Hotel as a Works Progress Administration project and began to transform the building’s shell into a theater so that Dock Street Theatre tickets could be sold once more. Although the interior was designed as an 18th-Century London playhouse, local forested and milled black cypress trees were added to provide a touch of Charleston. Dock Street Theatre, named for its original theater, reopened in 1937.
The City of Charleston modernized the theater in 2007, and Dock Street Theatre reopened for the third time in 2010. Today the venue houses Charleston Stage, its resident theater troupe, and The City Gallery, a local art space.
Dock Street Theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Daily tours are available. Rumors persist that ghosts haunt Dock Street Theatre, so do not be surprised if you see an apparition during your visit.
