The theatre opened on July 1, 1946, with a double feature of The Bandit of Sherwood Forest and Getting Gertie’s Garter. Vincey Raney designed the theatre in the art deco style that was popular at the time. There is even a replica of the sidewalk in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Raney designed all sorts of movie theatres, shopping malls, drive-ins and in-door theatres, most of which are now demolished or closed, except for the Bal Theatre. The building cost about two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars to build and had a special opening ceremony where airplanes dropped streamers as Virginia Weidler christened the box office with a champagne bottle.
The Historic Bal Theatre has been in continual operation since it opened and has remained independently owned. In fact, in 1962 the owner, Renny Lamarrir, won an antitrust lawsuit against the United California Theatre Company and won an $800,000 settlement. The Bal now operates as a performing arts center hosting not just film screenings, but musical performances, theatric troupes, and comedy shows, as well as private events.
