The venue started off showing mostly French films and operettas. The theatre held a capacity of 3000 seats when it opened. In the 1920’s the theatre focused primarily on silent films and in the 1930’s switched its focus to talkies. During World War II the theatre found itself in a situation where the film industry halted production and the theatre brought back concerts, operas and ballet.
In the 1970’s the theatre underwent new management and added two new halls, St. Denis 2 and St. Denis 3, to the main theatre.
